Patriotic Essay Contest Winners Announced
THE COMMUNITY ACTION TEAM (CAT) and Jones Bicycles awarded winners in three age categories with brand new bikes in the patriotic essay contest on Tues., June 29. The three winners will also serve as grand marshals in the "Great American 4th of July Kids' Bike Parade" in Long Beach on July 4. The theme of the contest was "What Freedom Means to Me."
1st/2nd Grade Winner
Ian G. Clark, 2nd Grade, Lowell Elementary
To me freedom means America. America means a lot to me. It is my favorite country. The liberty bell represents freedom. It has a crack in it. We are the land of the free. Mostly all the animals are free, too. Some are not. I think that is very sad. A lot of the ocean's creatures are being killed. I wish they were free, too. I have freedom and so does America. Manatees, tigers and a lot more are becoming extinct. I love America.
3rd/4th Grade Winner
Lan Nguyen, 3rd Grade, Signal Hill Elementary
Before we had freedom, we could not do much. Now that we have freedom, we can do anything we want. Freedom means a lot to me. Here are some of the things freedom means to me.
Freedom means nobody can come and make you work in their gardens without paying you. With freedom, people pay you money so you can take care of their garden. Without freedom, you will have to work in other people's gardens without getting paid.
Freedom means nobody can tell you whose side to be on. Because of freedom, we can be on a side we like and have our own point of view. If we did not have freedom, we will be forced to do things that we normally would not like to do.
Freedom means nobody can come and tell our families which holidays to celebrate or ban us from celebrating the holidays that we like. With freedom on our side, our family can celebrate any holiday we want even if it's not a national holiday. Without freedom, our families will be forced to celebrate a holiday we have never even heard of.
All these things are what freedom means to me. These things are all important. Mostly, freedom means happiness and celebrating our lives of being free to me. Finally, no one can force us to do things we do not want to.
5th/6th Grade Winner
Caroline Greenwood, 5th Grade, Lowell Elem.
To me, freedom means a lot of things. If you live in a free country, it means you can worship what you want and believe in things that your religion believes in.
There are many things that make the United States a free country. For instance: you are allowed to vote when you're 18. You get to learn to drive a car when you're 16, and you get to go to the schools you want. Also, you are allowed to go to any church, pray, not be told how to pray, and believe in anything.
A lot of people come to America for religious freedom. Nobody tells you how or when to pray and worship. People are free to go to any church and believe in anything.
I am glad to live in a free country with all the freedoms I have. Many people fight for it while others take it for granted. I will always stand for my country and its freedoms.
